Exporting data from an ISAM db

Hi, I need to export data from an ISAM UNIX database into a flat file, so that it can be imported in a new application. I know nothing about the platform it runs on or any version information, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice or insight into how easy or difficult this is going to be. Are we likely to find database tools at the customers that will enable us to export the data ? TIA Phil.

It depends on how much you know about the data in the C-ISAM files. If you can tell where the fields end, then it isn't too hard. If you can't, it is near enough impossible. You need to know the types, too. And if the C-ISAM has variable length records, it is going to be rather difficult to do manually. You could look up DataJunction for a tool, or you could write your own. Whether the client site has any depends on whether anybody foresaw a need to unload data into an ASCII format. Hi, Do you have ODBC access to the ISAM files. If yes, then try WinSQL Professional at http://www.imranweb.com/freesoft Thanks, Phil Grace wrote: > Hi, > > I need to export data from an ISAM UNIX database into a flat file, so > that it can be imported in a new application. > > I know nothing about the platform it runs on or any version > information, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice or insight > into how easy or difficult this is going to be. > > Are we likely to find database tools at the customers that will enable > us to export the data ? > > TIA > Phil.
Hi Phil, I am having the exact same problem. I just have an .DAT file that is ISAM format but have no idea how to flatten it. Did you get any leads since you posted the message? Thanks, Adi. Hi Imran, I have the same problem as Phil and all I have is .DAT file that was FTPed over to NT box from UNIX. Is there any way to figure out the structure of the data and convert it into the ASCII format? Thanks, Adnan.
