Linux IDS OBDC

My experience with the newer Informix products is very limited. I presently have the IDS for Linux cd and am planning to install on a virgin machine. Lets assume I have a running IDS on Linux with a number of w98 pc's attached. What explicit items need to be loaded on the linux and w98 sides to enable the w98 to access the data on the linux server via obdc. What does the obdc for linux mentioned on the website for informix include both sides? For example, w98 user is in word97 and wants to query the database for a bunch of names. On SQL7, I just need to point to the dsn. Joel
On linux, you'll need to set up IDS exactly as you would a unix machine (e.g., create the informix group and user, set environment variables, determine storage, install the RPMs, modify onconfig so you have onsoctcp enabled, etc.) and then install the Informix ODBC drivers on the client machines, set up a DNS that points to the IDS/linux machine, and that's about it. I may have forgotten something, but the error messages you may receive will be pretty straightforward to fix. BTW, you will need a 2.2.10 kernel and glibc 2.1 or up for IDS to work correctly. You would need a suitably patched 2.0.36 kernel (e.g. Redhat 5.2 with patches or SuSE 6.0 with patches), OR Red Hat 6.0 (no patches needed). OR, you can use a 2.2.10 kernel and run IDS with ipcshm protocol... but in my experience, you can't run soctcp protocol with a 2.2 kernel other than Red Hat 6.0 unless you customize a number of elements. -- Alan Denney yosemite at accesscom.com "You're crazy!
