RE: ODBC and Tuxedo

12/FEB Jeff, In my opinion before answering your question, I want to give a brief write up on the Tuxedo architecture. Tuxedo Architecture can be split into three sections Tuxedo Client , Tuxedo Application Server & Database. Also it is not necessary that all the three sections should be on separate machines. They may be on same machines. Tuxedo Client : Tuxedo client can be any popular Front end's such as VB / Power Builder / SQL Windows / JAM (Jyacc) and even Informix 4GL / ESQL -C. The only conditions is that the front end should be able to interface with the Tuxedo Client API. Tuxedo Application Server : Tuxedo application server is generally developed using the 3GL's such as Cobol / C or through 4GL such as JAM-TPI (Jyacc) . Tuxedo application would be an executable. Each specific task is written as a service. Tuxedo application server can be seen as the bundle of Services. The service routine interfaces with the resources such as Databases The Client would interface with the server through the Tuxedo Client API commands such as TPI CLIENT INIT, TPI CALL SERVICE etc #1) Assuming you want to access Informix from a Windows based front end through Tuxedo ; my suggestion is : Construct the Tuxedo application server using Informix ESQL / C & have the windows based front end connect to Tuxedo Client API. This means you are not going through ODBC. #2) Assuming you want to access Informix from a Unix based ASCII front end such as Informix 4GL / Informix ESQL - C ; my suggestion is : Construct the Tuxedo application server using Informix ESQL / C & have the ASCII front end connect to Tuxedo Client API. #3) Assuming that you want to write the Tuxedo Application Server using ODBC. This would be possible because as there are lot of third party vendors providing ODBC based 3GL libraries on Unix. The advantage in this architecture would be that you can on a later date have the Tuxedo Application server connect to another database such as Sybase or Oracle with out much rewrite of your applications. But my only doubt does any vendor provide the TP/XA features in their library. TP/XA is a must I have following questions with regard to your installations a) Are you using INFORMIX - 4GL / INFORMIX - ESQL-C to access Informix ? What is your front end ? b) Which version of Tuxedo are you using ? c) What is your level of expertise on Tuxedo Administration ? ---------- From: Jeff Stevens[SMTP:cms@sprynet.com] Sent: Dienstag, 11. The database is designed and used by an app written for Tuxedo also running on the HP/Unix server. Will using ODBC interfere with Tuxedo? Thanks, Jeff Stevens
