Wrong group, ok, there is no real way of telling how much 'free space' is on a tape short of determining how much is stored on it. That of course depends on what wrote it. You can try this idea if your shell scripting is up. dd if=/dev/rmt/0n of=/dev/null bs=1024 (change the 0n to your norewind device) note the amount of blocks read and keep repeating until the dd returns an error. then rewind the tape. You now will have a rough idea of how much is stored on there. If the device is set to use compression, forget this idea.
