How to clear logical logs?
Posted in 2009
A user on IDS 11.50.FC4 (Linux) filled his logical logs, added another log with onparams, backed the logs up, and asked how to "purge" them. Answer: no purge is needed — backing up logs with ontape/onbar frees them for reuse automatically. onstat -l flags show status ('B' = backed up/reusable, 'C' = current, 'L' = holds last checkpoint); logs stay busy only if an open transaction still has records in them. Extra logs are only needed if transactions can exceed LTXHWM or if backups aren't frequent; continuous backup (ontape/onbar -c, or ALARMPROGRAM with ontape -a / onbar -l) and automatic log addition from rootdbs were suggested.

Hi all, I met this morning some troubles with logical logs ; they were full. So I've added one new log file and I've backed them up, and now I'd like to purge them. So how can I do that? Thank you
Hi,
The act of backing them up using either ontape or onbar will make them ready
to be used again - no need to purge.
Onstat -l will show you information like
700000387ffcf98 128 U-B---- 5376 2:1561653 12800
12800 100.00
700000387ffd028 129 U-B---- 5377 2:1574453 12800
12800 100.00
The third column shows you some flags U-B----, the B is backed up.
It is considered good manners to post your informix version and platform
when using this list - It is best not to insite the wrath of the Elders.

Thank you Mark for your answer.
So does it mean that if I bakcup regularly my logical logs I won't have to add
a new logical log with onparams?
As I was seeing used to 100% by using onstat -l I was fearing that IDS won't
use it again.
So sorry for not writing the version I'm using on this ; 11.5FC4 on linux, as
it's a general question I was thinking that version wasn't too much important
in this case. In most of case I post the version and the os, because I want
help and need answers in most of cases ;)
Thank you
Hi Jean-michel,
You are correct. You shouldn't have to create new logs if you backup the
logs that you currently have. That is provided that you have enough logs to
cover your transactional load.

Mark

Nothing left to do. Once you archive the logical logs they are available to
be reused by the engine unless there is an open transaction with records in
that log file. Run onstat -l, all logs that have been backed up and are
free for reuse will have a 'B' in their flags column. The log marked with a
'C' is the current log and the log marked with an 'L' contains the last
checkpoint record.

You would have to add more logical logs if the sum of your transaction sizes
for all typical concurrent transactions might exceed 70% (or whatever you
have LTXHWM set to in the ONCONFIG file) of the total size of the logical
logs or if you are not backing up the logical logs constantly using
ontape/onbar -c or as they fill using the ALARMPROGRAM (with ontape -a or
onbar -l) then you need enough logical log space to hold all of thetransaction details for the period between periodic logical log backups.
FYI, you can tell the engine to automatically add logical logs from the
rootdb dbspace when needed so you don't have to worry about it.
