Re: Diffs between InfoModeler in IUS and ROM

I can't give you the exact info your are looking for, because I have not seen the IUS version of Infomodeler. I can tell you that the version of Infomodeler bundled with Infomodeler is not the full version. I use Infomodeler extensively, and really think it is great. In the Help|About screen I found a chart that highlights some of the version differences in the versions of Infomodeler. IUS version supports Object/Relational SQL3 constructs in the dictionary. This means you can create visual models that directly control your database schema. Full version of Infomodeler has teriffic reverse engineering and ALTER / sync capability, and I assume IUS version does as well. If you need to change a database with existing data and a SQL ALTER statement isn't sufficient, product will automatically create a temp table, migrate data to temp table, drop appropriate foreign keys, create new table with changes, migrate data from temp table back to "original" table, drop temp table, and rebuild all the right keys. This feature is a huge timesaver. I don't think any other tool will automate this process. The chart says IUS version supports only the data dictionary. Enterprise edition (EE) of Infomodeler does a really nice job of seperating conceptual and model from the dictionary, but bi-directionally migrating changes made in one to the other.l. In EE, you can create a conceptual model using either IDEF1X or Object Role Modeling (ORM). I think ORM is far superior to IDEF1X, but in either case, a dictionary will be automatically generated from your conceptual model. In an ORM model it is very easy to represent complicated constraints that end up as check clauses or Infomodeler generated stored procedure code. You can also merge seperate conceptual models (even have one in ORM, and one in IDEF1X) and create a single dictionary. I don't think you get any of this in IUS version. It appears from chart that IUS version doesn't support forward engineering. Web site www.infomodelers.com probably has the info you need. I would encourage you to get the full version if you need a design and management tool it is very good. Thanks, Bill MacLean **** I do not work for Infomodelers, but I have taught classes for them. I built my relationship with them because I like what they do, not vice versa *** In article <6528ig$9tk@cssun.mathcs.emory.edu>, KENDRICKS_CHERYL@heb.com ("KENDRICKS CHERYL") wrote: > > > Anyone who has the Informix ROM (Relational Object Manager) software and DB > Admin Kit 9.12.TC2 software (included in IUS 9.X, I believe this is the > InfoModeler Software that Chang Oh mention in his response to Case Modeling > Tools), could you please enlighten me on the major difference between these > two tools. > > I noticed that the DB Admin Kit includes software called "Schema > Knowledge".
