Using Informix-SQL

A two day course for application developers and end users who have a working knowledge of Informix-SQL. Practical exercises are a significant feature of this course and are used throughout to consolidate the theory.

Course Objectives

On completion of this course the delegate will be able to:

  • Understand relational database terminology
  • Understand the structure of Informix database tables
  • Query and maintain data
  • Develop queries based on one or more tables in a database

  • Basic concepts of relational database design
  • Entities, attributes, Primary and Foreign Keys
  • Connecting to a database
  • Understanding the structure of database tables
  • Informix data types, indexes and NULL values
  • Constructing Informix SQL statements
  • Running, modifying and saving SQL scripts
  • Re-directing the output of queries
  • Building a simple query
  • Using aggregate functions AVG, MAX, MIN, SUM, COUNT
  • Building expressions into the select list
  • Using display labels
  • Applying filter conditions using the WHERE clause
  • Using LIKE, MATCHES, BETWEEN and IN
  • Using the ORDER BY clause to sort the output of data
  • Understanding the GROUP BY clause
  • Selecting data into a temporary table
  • Selecting data from more than one table in the database
  • Simple and outer table joins
  • Inserting, updating, and deleting data
  • In-built functions: USER, TODAY, and CURRENT
  • Date manipulation functions
  • Introduction to transaction logging
  • Using the BEGIN/COMMIT/ROLLBACK WORK statements
  • Unloading data and loading data using ascii files
