SE and OnLine on the same box
Posted in 2000
Question: can Informix SE and Informix OnLine run at the same time on one Solaris box? Answer from several posters: yes, provided the machine can handle the load. The advice is to install each product under its own $INFORMIXDIR and manage environment variables (INFORMIXDIR, INFORMIXSERVER, PATH, library paths) per product, since PATH entries effectively force separate trees anyway. Jonathan Leffler adds that with older 5.x you could share one INFORMIXDIR by setting SQLEXEC to sqlexec or sqlturbo, but with modern versions (OnLine 7.31/9.20, SE 7.24) use two INFORMIXDIRs and share one sqlhosts file via links or by setting $INFORMIXSQLHOSTS to an absolute path.

Hi, I have to install two products on the same Solaris Box. One runs Informix SE and the second runs Informix OnLine. Can I make this two products and Informix servers running simultaneously on the same Solaris Box ? thanks, -- Thierry ACHAINTRE Architecte Syst'mes et R'seaux - EURIWARE thierry.achaintre@euriware.fr "This message is not an official statement of EURIWARE policies."
Yes, subject to the box being to handle it, just install into separate directories and play with the environment Thierry Achaintre wrote: > > Hi, > > I have to install two products on the same Solaris Box. > One runs Informix SE and the second runs Informix OnLine. > > Can I make this two products and Informix servers running simultaneously on > the same Solaris Box ? > > thanks, > > -- > Thierry ACHAINTRE > Architecte Systèmes et Réseaux - EURIWARE > thierry.achaintre@euriware.fr > "This message is not an official statement of EURIWARE policies." -- Paul Watson # WF Software Ltd # You are only young once Tel: +44 1436 674729 # but you can be immature Fax: +44 1436 678693 # for ever www.wfsoftware.com #

Are you saying that there should be a different $INFORMIXDIR for each product or that the two servers will install correctly in separate subdirectories of the same $INFORMIXDIR? Walt. I would do the former, but I don't think the later will work, cos you'll have to set INFORMIXDIR/version and INFORMIXDIR/version/bin in the PATH so effectively you are doing the first option Walt Hultgren wrote: > > Are you saying that there should be a different $INFORMIXDIR for each > product or that the two servers will install correctly in separate > subdirectories of the same $INFORMIXDIR? > > Walt. > > Paul Watson wrote: > > > > Yes, subject to the box being to handle it, just install into separate > > directories and play with the environment > > > > Thierry Achaintre wrote: > > > > > > I have to install two products on the same Solaris Box. > > > One runs Informix SE and the second runs Informix OnLine. > > -- > Walt Hultgren > Manager, Information Technology > Yerkes Research Center of Emory University > Mailto:walt@rmy.emory.edu -- 404-727-0648 -- Paul Watson # WF Software Ltd # You are only young once Tel: +44 1436 674729 # but you can be immature Fax: +44 1436 678693 # for ever www.wfsoftware.com #
We do use separate $INFORMIXDIR's to have different versions on the same system for testing, but at any one time the server and all tools are using the same top Informix directory. My concern would be getting all of the library directory paths, etc., set right. Thanks for the info. Out of morbid curiosity, I think I'll see what the doc's have to say before I make any big moves. If you've read the other replies and get bored easily, go on to the next message. In the good old days of 5.x, I'd usually install both OnLine and SE (and I-Net and I-Star, come to that) all in the same single INFORMIXDIR. As long as you set SQLEXEC to sqlexec or sqlturbo, pretty much everything worked as you needed it to. In these more modern times, your OnLine should be version 7.31 or 9.20, and SE will be 7.24, and you would be better off doing as others suggested, and having two separate INFORMIXDIRs. You can share a single sqlhosts file, either using links (symbolic or hard) to make the SE version refer to the OnLine version or vice versa, or setting $INFORMIXSQLHOSTS to some absolute pathname in one or both environments. -- Yours, Jonathan Leffler (Jonathan.Leffler@Informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h> Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.95 -- http://www.perl.com/CPAN "Windows is NOT a virus: a virus is small and efficient."
