Unless you are running IDS 10.00 or later and your OS supports DIRECT IO and you have configured the engine to support DIRECT IO, RAW or character devices are considerably faster than block devices because the IO subsystem do not have to copy data from the engine's buffers into the system buffer cache before writing to disk (and the reverse for reading). RAW is about 5-15% faster than COOKED or block devices and COOKED devices tend to be 10-20% faster than filesystem files. Using DIRECT IO the penalty seems to be something under 5% depending on the how good the OS's implementation is so many are now recommending that RAW is no longer worth the trouble. Personally I'm not convinced yet. Art S.
