Informix rolling upgrade FC3 > FC7 - sysmaster issue
Posted in 2022
Marc Demhartner's FC3 to FC7 upgrade failed rebuilding sysmaster. Paul Watson and Art Kagel suggested checking rootdbs space, the buildsmi log and PATH. buildsmi could not find dbaccess; a trailing slash on INFORMIXDIR seemed to help but later tests disproved it. Adding /opt/informix/bin to the PATH used when the server starts fixed it. Andreas Legner confirmed the engine passes its PATH to buildsmi.

Hi, i tried today on our QA system to upgrade from FC3 to FC7 directly. It failed at rebuilding the "sysmaster" db. How to proceed in this way? ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------ #Informix
Also after a restart it keeps failing ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
You done all the pre-requisites? Run of rootdbs space during the conversion? Cheers Paul Paul Watson Oninit LLC +1-913-387-7529 www.oninit.com Oninit® is a registered trademark of Oninit LLC
root db space is definitly enough there - all other DBs worked fine. I installed CSDK 4.50FC7 also. Very strange. ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
Marc: What's in the build log file: /tmp/buildsmi.1017430? That may tell us why the sysmaster rebuild failed. As Paul noted, it is often that the rootdb dbspace is too small and filled up. You can manually build sysmaster by running the script: $INFORMIXDIR/ etc/buildsmi, but try to figure out why it failed the first time. Art ------------------------------ Art S. I tried to execuite "buildsmi" as user informix already - gave me a lot of "Error in line 20" etc. I reverted back the QA VM and will try without the CSDK installed - rootdb space was definitly enough there. ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
i tried again - without CSDK installed... same error.
looks like it can´t find "dbaccess" ?

Dumb question .... You have INFORMIXDIR/bin on the PATH?
Yes, i have /opt/informix as a symbilic link to /opt/informix-14.10FC7 dbacess works as root declare -x PATH="/root/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/opt/informix/bin:/opt/informix/bin:/root/bin" centos 8 ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
I think i got it....
it could not find "dbaccess" because our enviromentvarible is set to:
declare -x INFORMIXDIR="/opt/informix"
there is no / at the end - when i set it to
declare -x INFORMIXDIR="/opt/informix/"
and restart the server as user informix it worked...

Strange - none of my systems have the trailing slash. FC7 ism ?? Cheers Paul Paul Watson Oninit LLC +1-913-387-7529 www.oninit.com Oninit® is a registered trademark of Oninit LLC
In our daily work etc. its also no issue with this setting... maybe its only happening when it uses this "buildsmi" shell script? ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
Nope. Running 14.10.FC7W1 and had no trouble upgrading to FC7 from FC6 or earlier upgrades and I've never appended a slash to INFORMIXDIR. The only time I've had to do that is passing $INFORMIXDIR to find since it's a symbolic link and find doesn't like following them without either the trailing slash or the -follow option and it's easier to type "find $INFORMIDIR/ ..." than "find $INFORMIXDIR -follow ..." and I'm a lazy SOB. Alright.. i tested it again.. as user root with Informixdir with / at the end.. started FC7... same error.
buildsmi script can´t find dbaccess... I created IBM support ticket.. let see

One question.. i noticed that while looking into the AF File...
this could be the reason why it can´t find dbaccess ya?
Could you show me your enviromentfile for informix ?

Edit the buildsmi script and get it to dump the env it is seeing, I would do it just before the first dbaccess call, line 54 in my buildsmi
Definitely, the buildsmi script (called here internally by the engine) will simply call dbaccess, so depend on a proper PATH setting being passed down from the engine.
An Informix environment should always have PATH set to $INFORMIXDIR/bin:<OLD_PATH>.

Yes, i tried again and modified the path for informix server during startup - including /opt/informix/bin in the path, did the trick. Works directly as it should - also without trailing / in path. Thanks all for the help ------------------------------ Marc Demhartner ------------------------------
