In Informix-speak - a server is the machine on which an instance runs and by extension, if there is only a single instance, often the instance itself if one is being sloppy. An instance is a copy of the Informix engine software running and managing a discrete set of disk space on a server. Informix permits multiple instances to run concurrently on a server by using unique SERVERNUM and DBSERVERNAME/DBSERVERALIASES values in the ONCONFIG file that configures each instance. By extension 'instance' also refers to the individual ONCONFIG files for each instance and the sqlhosts names of each. Art S. Kagel
