Linux Setup with FC shared disks

Hi all, we are currently planning a new Linux setup with IDS 11. (other setups are using all Solaris SPARC, so this is our first Linux setup). I would like to ask if there are any recommendations about things to avoid / use. The intended platform is 2x Dual Core + 4 GB Memory per machine (2 machines, one active, one cold standby, shared disks seen by both machines). IDS Express Edition will be used. We want to use SUN Disk Arrays with 2Gb FC Adapters (like in our other setups). First, which processors to use: XEON, Opteron, other ? Second, which OS to use: Redhat, Suse, other ? Third, use additional software for Disk Array Access or use the raw disks and Informix mirroring (as we do on our Solaris installations). Fourth, other things to be aware of (FC connectivity on Linux, which Controllers (QLogic was our choice), other things) ? Thank you for your feedback, Marcus
Just a few things at first sight. IDS express in only for 2 CPUs being 2 dual core. Would'nt that being 4 CPUs? Installation still works though. Also IDS express does not support ER/HDR at least until version 10. I think you should move to IDS workgroup at least. Hi Walter, I was told IDS Express handles two dual core CPUs, but this might be a wrong info. I will verify that with the vendor. Maybe they meant hyperthreading CPUs. We will not use HDR, but a cold standby server which is being activated manually on the same IP if the primary goes down. This is possible because the disks are shared between the two machines. We have this setup running multiple times without any problems. Informix does not start the engine if the IP Interface is not active so there is no danger that both instances are accessing the disk at the same time. Just make sure that the IDS installation and all of the config files (like sqlhosts and the ONCONFIG file) are on the shared disks NOT on local disks. Putting the software on local disks leaves you open to problems if the server crashes and the backup configuration is out-of-date. Art S.
