Informix 11.50 FC9 Migrate to a newer version ?
Posted in 2015
A user running Informix 11.50.FC9 on AIX 5.3 planned OS upgrades to AIX 6.1 then 7, and asked whether to also move to Informix 11.70 (the only version certified by their application vendor; 12.10 was not). Consensus: yes, upgrade. 11.50 is supported on AIX 5.3 but not on AIX 6.1, so the engine must move; doing the OS and database upgrade together means one test cycle instead of two. Several suggested going straight to 12.10 if the vendor allows, and pointed to IBM's compatibility matrix, "What's new" docs and the 5+3 lifecycle policy as justification. The poster accepted the advice.

Hi to All Our main application uses an Informix database (11.50 FC9) installed on AIX 5.3 TL 12. I know that the AIX version is not supported, so we will migrate to version 6.1 in the first instance (Q1/2016) and then to version 7 (Q1/2017). My question : Informix 11.50 FC9 is still supported by IBM and is validated on AIX, should I migrate to Informix 11.70 (approved version for the application, 12 is not) thank you in advance
Yes 11.50 is supported. Yes ypu should upgrade. Thank you Mr Art, I have to convince my hierarchy to do this migrate, although this will not cost nothing exeptings many days for testings the application under 11.70 can you help me with any arguments ?
Whenever you change a component in your solution you should do testing. If you do 2 changes (OS and then Informix) you'll have to do two test phases. If you upgrade both at once you only to do one. In the future 11.50 will be deprecated. So you'll hev to upgrade in the future. Naturally, if I play devil's advocate it's more or less obvious that the tests should be more detailed when you change the database than when you change the OS. Then of course you get much more functionality in 11.70... A review of the new features and the benefits you may get can lead you to identify good reasons to upgrade. Finally, I find it a bit concerning to move to IDS 11.70 at this point.... I understand the limitation arising from the fact the 3rd party application supplier has not yet certified 12.10... but when are they planning to do it? It's in the fifth fixpack... that would roughly be half of it's "useful" life (we usually go up to FC9, FC10....) And again, the new features in 12 are significant... Regards. Hello. You should consider and forward the official link, just in case: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27013343#aix About the arguments, you should search for What's new in version 11.70.xC8 of IBM Informix in your Knowledge Center page (eg 11.70, search for the latest release mentioned above). In case you want to know about 12.10, search for What's new in version 12.10.xc5 (on 12.10 Knowledge Center). Hope it helps and justify your upgrade needs (strongly recommended)! Regards. Hi John, Informix 11.50.FC9 is not supported on AIX 5.3. You will need to migrate to 11.70 or 12.10. Informix 11.50.XXX is still supported by IBM . There is no official end of support (EOS) date. However this version is in EOM (End of market); cannot be sold. As to when this version will reach the EOS, nothing is official yet but the end of life process in in the process. From the time the EOS is annouced, you will get 12 months. As far as moving to another version, I would suggest to move to 12.10 directly since this version has been around for over a year and we are at its 5th release and stable. If as you say the application is only approved on 11.70, it is up to you. Migration, technically, is not hard to do especially if it is on the same machine (IN PLACE MIGRATION), however the whole migration process might take time from the quality testing point of view (testing the application: functionnal testing, performance, testing your tools around the engine, batches, etc). You would be the only one to know what needs to be tested. We have a server running AIX 5.3, and when we needed to migrate to a supported version of informix last year, we were told that the highest version of informix that would be supported on AIX 5.3 was IDS11.50.FC9W3. Has this changed? ________________________________________ From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [ids-bounces@iiug.org] on behalf of Khaled Bentebal [khaled.bentebal@consult-ix.fr] Sent: Friday, August 28, 2015 4:23 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Re: Informix 11.50 FC9 Migrate to a newer vers.... Just for information, see link below Informix 11.5O is supported on AIX 5.3, 6.1 and 7.1 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27013343
Hi to All here is below what i found on ibm site. in fact an ibm product is supported for 5+3 years since its general availability (GA) the GA of 11.50 was in 2008, so in 2016 it won't be supported ! this is a major argument :), plus the functionnality :) thanks to all exract of ibm policy (http://www-01.ibm.com/software/support/lifecycle/lc-policy.html) Our policies and practices for supporting your success with our software are based on your feedback and the following principles. Establishing a new normal for support duration. Historically, weve provided standard (defect and non-defect) product technical support for a minimum of three years from the date the product release was made generally available by IBM, with the option to get support extensions for at least an additional two years following a products end of support (EOS) date for an extra charge set by IBM (so-called Standard 3+2 support). Over the past few years we have aggressively moved many of the 2000+ products in our software portfolio to Enhanced 5+3 Support a minimum of five full years of standard support from the date the product release was made generally available by IBM, with the option to get support extensions for at least an additional three years following a products EOS date for an extra charge set by IBM. In line with your feedback, we intend to continue to apply our Enhanced Support policy to an increasing number of our IPLA* and ICA** software products. You have more flexibility to migrate to new versions on the schedule dictated by your business needs, without worrying that you will run out of support.
I would just add that IBM has committed to providing support for three major releases of its software. For Informix right now that means 11.50, 11.70, and 12.10. You will probably not see 11.50 go out of support until after the release of whatever version follows 12.10 (12.50?) and that has not been announced yet.
