RE: Creating a delta database with Informix to cap
Posted in 2011
Larry (IDS 11.50.FC5 on Solaris 10) asked whether Informix offers a built-in way to maintain a "delta" database capturing all changes made to his main database. Respondents suggested triggers, Enterprise Replication (table-level), HDR/RSS (whole-instance copies), CRCOLS, and especially the Change Data Capture (CDC) facility. The consensus: Informix provides only a CDC API that reads changes from the logical logs; you must either write your own capture/apply functions or buy a product (e.g. IBM InfoSphere CDC, or third-party tools like Infotrace) to land the changes in a target database. The IBM CDC product was described as chargeable, while rolling your own against the API costs only development effort. No step-by-step setup was given.

Sun Solaris 10 IDS 11.50.FC5 Growth Has anyone had any experience with the following: I have heard that Informix provides a method whereby you can create a special database that you can populate with data as it is changed in your main database. (Kind of a Delta database, if you will.) Has anyone had experience with setting this up? What was the effort involved? Is there any good documentation out there that someone can point me to to explain this and to provide good instructions on setting this up? Larry
Larry, I think you are referring to either Enterprise Replication or HDR. If there is another method in V11 I have not read about then I am sure one of the other IIUG members will enlighten us. ER and HDR provide different options. HDR is an instance copy whereas with ER you can replicate at a table level. Have a read of the manuals on replication. I have loads of experience of ER but not much on HDR. > To: ids@iiug.org > From: lsorensen25@msn.com > Subject: RE: Creating a delta database with Informix to.... You can only do this with triggers. There is mo built in feature for this. I would say there is no trivial way to do that, but it really depends on what your needs are. Can you elaborate on that? Or give us more details about where/when did you hear about that? As others mentioned, you could do this with triggers, ER or data capture (you'd need to define these for each table). Other options like HDR/RSS will create an copy of the whole instance, and after the initial synchronization only the changes are sent to the secondaries... HDR/RSS is terribly simple to setup but not sure if that's whay you're looking for. ER is very flexible, but more complex. Yes, CDC will do what you want. Note that CDC is a separate product, not part of the Informix software. But yes, CDC is capable of what they call "auditing" the data changes, meaning changes made by DML statements. DDL is not captured. See http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/infosphere/change-data-capture/ for the official product page. Also check DeveloperWorks for useful articles. You would have to write the catch functions to make the inserts into the delta database or purchase a 3rd party system that can do it for you. So, what you are saying is that CDC is not an all encompassing solution? It requires other software? As car as "catch functions", is that not what the CDC software does with the proper setup? Hi, The devil is in the details. The CDC product (separate software) would, in fact, do the whole job. The CDC agent for the Informix database captures changes as they occur using the API in the Informix product. That agent then puts that data wherever you want. You configure the target, which may be another Informix database. If you configure CDC to do this as an audit trail, the timestamp of the change and perhaps other stuff is also recorded by CDC. So the CDC product uses (relies on) the API provided by Informix to capture changes from the logical logs. If you write your own functions (the "catch functions") to use that interface and then tuck the data away somewhere, you can accomplish the same result. The only issue is how much time, people, and money is involved in each case and whether or not you have the programming skills to do it. Larry, Informix has a change data capture interface which is used by other products. I suspect that those other products would have a cost. But if you wanted, you can write you on application to capture the changes by using the CDC API and that would not be a cost item. No, CDC is not free. It is a separate product with its own price, based on the size of the source and target systems.
