ontape backup failed
Posted in 2010
On IDS 9.40.FC2 under Tru64 5.1A, a level-0 ontape backup fills tape 1 then fails as soon as the second tape is mounted, with "open tape device /dev/tape/tape8 failed code -1 errno 5" and later "could not write archive tape ... errno 28" (no space); level-1 backups still worked. Suggestions from the list included checking that tape 2 wasn't write-protected (tested with dd rather than mt), trying new tapes, verifying the device isn't a no-rewind device or actually a filesystem file hitting a 2GB limit, checking the ONCONFIG TAPEDEV/TAPESIZE/TAPEBLK settings, and making sure the first tape had actually been ejected. The poster confirmed the device and non-write-protected tapes, but no resolution is recorded in the thread.

Since last one week I am getting an error "Archieve failed" while doing ontape
backup. Before it was working fine. The actual message is as follows.
# ontape -s -L 0
Please mount tape 1 on /dev/tape/tape8 and press Return to continue ...
10 percent done.
20 percent done.
30 percent done.
40 percent done.
50 percent done.
60 percent done.
70 percent done.
80 percent done.
Read/Write End Of Medium enabled: blocks = 5043224
Tape is full ...
Please label this tape as number 1 in the arc tape sequence.
This tape contains the following logical logs:
674694
Please mount tape 2 on /dev/tape/tape8 and press Return to continue ...
Archive failed - function open tape device /dev/tape/tape8 failed code -1
errno 5
Program over.
The message comes right after I load the second tape and hit return.
I rebboted the machine still it gives the same message. I try to backup as
informix and as a root user.
We do not have any support for this version of IDS.
Thank you in advance.

1. Make sure the 2nd tape doesn't have write-protected switch one or
2. Try with a different tape.
Let us know how it goes...

I check the tape with mt command, it is not write protected. I even try with a different tape. Thanks Kanti
Is it possible that the second tape was write protected?

"mnt" (I believe) is to mount the device, it doesn't guaranty that the tape is
writeable, use "dd" command to test write something to it.

'mt' is tape-access command. On some systems, it might be 'tape'. It applies
to the default defined tape device and allows for parameters like; rewind,
forward-one-file-mark, rewind-and-eject, set-block-size........ etc.

Please mount tape 2 on /dev/tape/tape8 and press Return to continue...
Archive failed - function could not write archive tape. failed code -1 errno 28
Program over.
The onconfig file has following message.
14:35:48 Archive on rootdbs, logdbs, physdbs, masterdbs,
.. ABORTED.
14:35:48 Aborted by client.
Is anyone know how to compressed data using ontape backup, so it will use only
one tape.
Thank you

Is it possible that you are using a norewind tape device?

Have you made sure that you are using the correct name for the tape device?
You may want to do an ls -l /dev/tape/tape8. The message is telling you that
there is no space left on device. I am not sure which version of IDS you are
using or what OS you are using, but the blocks = message looks suspiciously
like 2GB using 4k blocks. Maybe you are not using the actual tape drive at
all, but a filesystem file.

IDS Version 9.40 FC2, Unix version Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.1A
I am using /dev/tape/tape8 tape device.
# ls -l /dev/tape/tape8
crw-rw-rw- 1 root system 19,632 Feb 3 15:30 /dev/tape/tape8
It is not a "norewind" tape device.
It is working fine for Level 1 backup. It was working until last week for
Level 0. We have not changed anything OS or IDS.
Thank you all
Kanti
What are all your tape parameters?
grep TAPE $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG

Another thought.
Maybe the first tape has NOT been ejected.. For some reasons, you've been
looking at a wrong tape drive; therefore, your new tape won't be seen by
ontape.
You see if tape #1 is still in the drive and you hit return, ontape will fail
I guess.
