RE: Informix vs. Oracle

Hi, it seems that Martin is not about to translate his message so this is my attempt. I don't know Oracle at all but it sounds interesting (and the Czech original is much better than this translation :-) Vasek Martin wrote: We migrate from Informix to Oracle and find that Oracle has great advantages. 1. Oracle's stored procedure language PL/SQL is much more powerfull and run-time effective than Informix's SPL. 2. The area of transactions and simultaneous accesses is much better solved in Oracle: - Oracle has so called mutiversion records; it means that every of simultaneous transactions has its own version of data. If transaction B is trying to read a record being modificated by transaction A at the same time then B will get the original version of data. In Informix B has to wait for unlocking (the end of transaction A). Informix's solution leads to worse throughput and response time. - Informix misses the isolation level 'SERIALIZABLE' defined in SQL92. This isolation level simplifies a OLTP application developing in Oracle compared with Informix. 3. Oracle keeps SQL92 in a higher degree. > -----Original Message----- > From: Veverka Martin > Posted At: Monday, August 10, 1998 10:31 AM > Posted To: comp.databases.informix > Conversation: Informix vs. Oracle > Subject: V'hody Oraclu v''i Informixu > > My tak' p'ech'z'me z Informixu na Oracle a zji''ujeme, 'e Oracle > m' oproti Informixu zna'n' v'hody. > > 1.
