Could go to an Intel based machine as well for lower price but still excelent performance. This depends on database size, number of users and usage patterns. If you need GLS support (see below) you have to check that 4GL version 7.2 is available. >Assumption > >All the source programs of the current system are available. > >Why Migration=85? > >For improved performance. > >Queries=20 > >Q1. Given the above scenario, will just recompilation of the existing source >help? The latest 4GL should compile the source with a minimum of problems. You might want to utilize some new features, but that's another issue. If the C programs are functions used within 4GL there may be some changes to how they are interfaced to 4GL. If there are that should be a minor issue. As to shell scripts they may need changes, but that depends on what they do and how. >Q2. If no, is there any conversion tool available? No tools are needed. If there are any issues you will simply have to do minor modification to the source. I wouldn't expect any unless you have done very strange things. >Q3. Will Informix server give multi-language support? ( The application is >in Japanese ) I don't know anything about the Japanese support appart from the fact that it's supposed to be supported via GLS in the latest servers and in version 7.2 of 4GL. How did you do japanese support in those old tools? If you could do that at the time the same solution might work without GLS on the new server. If you have a special Japanese version of these old products you may have to do changes to use GLS. >Q4. If not, does latest version of Informix have a Japanese version readily >available in the market? The GLS support in the engine and 4GL 7.2 is supposed to support Japanese. I don't know about Dynamic 4GL. That uses simple translation tables that only support 8 bit character sets. As I understand it GLS also support other (16 bit) character sets. >Q5. Assuming the code is fully functional, how long do you think the >conversion activity is going to take for a source of approximately 1000 >lines of code? 1 hour after the engine and 4GL is installed :-) Seriously it depends on what problems you find. It may be as simple as installing the database and compiling the code. Of course you will need more time to learn how to set up everything, including GLS support if you need that, before you can start. Also you obviously need to do testing which I have no idea how long time you will need to do. Depends on the complexity of those 1000 lines of code. It's a realy tiny application though. >Q6. Will just porting on latest H/W and S/W bring out better performance? Much. Even if you use the SE 7.x database on new hardware you will see a fantastic improvement in performance. Probably many times faster. >Regards, >___Krupa Nils Myklebust NM Data AS Norway E-mail: Nils.Myklebust@nmdata.com FAQ at: http://www.iiug.org/techinfo/faq/faq_top.html (Now with ODBC info under "Third party products".)
