Problems with HD space

When I try to insert a new row on a table I receive an error message that says that informix can't allocate another EXTENT for that table (166 extent allocated for that table). Even if I delete 500.000 rows from that table informix doesn't change its opinion on the space left and, after adding less than an hundred rows it gives me again the same error code. I wish not to drop and create the table giving it more higher extents because it is too expansive. Can Anyone Help me ? Tanx
You could be hitting the "Max no of Extents" limit for the table (it varies)
or its detached indexes. Its probably advisable to reduce the number of
extents on the table. You could do that using the following commands
ALTER TABLE <tabname> NEXT SIZE <new_size>;
ALTER FRAGMENT ON TABLE <tabname> INIT IN <dbspace>;ALTER TABLE <tabname> NEXT SIZE <final size>;
<new_size> could be set to 1/2 the number of pages currently used by the table
(which means you could end up with about 4 extents).
<dbspace> could be any dbspace that has enough space for the table. Caution :
If your table is already fragmented use its existing fragmentation expression.
<final size> could be set to, say, 1/5 the number of pages currently used by
the table.
The "Delete 500.000 rows, Insert 100 rows, get error" problem could be because
of a detached Index with too many extents. You could get temporary relief by
recreating your Indexes. The ideal way to do that is to
SET INDEXES FOR <tablename> DISABLED;
SET INDEXES FOR <tablename> ENABLED;

use the HPL to unload and reload the table into just one extent. Nona >Subject: Problems with HD space >From: "Consorzio Idrico Piceno" mongardini@ciip.it >Date: 12.04.00 16:43 W.
