Changing user names without recreating accounts
Posted in 2000
For you Informix and/or AIX gurus: I am thinking about changing some of our usernames (for a number of different reasons) and I have completed one test successfully, as far as I can tell at this point. Using a test user, 1) I changed the username in the /etc/passwd file, leaving the unix id intact. 2) I changed the username in the /etc/group file 3) Changed ownership of home directory and files within to the new username 4) Used dbadmin to remove old username and add new one. For C.A.R.S admins: 1) rebuilt schemas so new username replaces old one. I am thinking that doing it this way, in a script would preserve unix and CARS id's. I am wondering if there are any other files in CARS that I need to change, and if anyone knows that this won't work. Will any of these procedures corrupt files and or logins?
