IDS newbie : onmode -s and database lost ?
Posted in 2006

Hi.
IDS V10 on RHEL3. A bit of knowledge of Database though (Informix SE to
name it)
1- dbaccessdemo works ok.So I create the database MY_DB, some tables in
it and then onmode -ky . When I restart the server, MY_DB is not here,
Why ?
2- I imagine it was because I had no dbspaces. I created one on a raw
devices, oncheck -pe shows it. I create MY_DB on it, stops the server
restart it. No MY_DB again...
3- may be the "kill" is to drastic? I try onmode -s , but oninit
processes continue to run ...Why ?
4- what about creating a new server? Is it necessary? Mine is demo_on,
the default one ?
As you can see, I need some general help "Where to begin with"
Thanks for any hint, doc, link...

How did you restart the server? If you did oninit -i again the -i means
initialize disk structures which will wipe out any data that already exists
in the server instance. After you create your database/tables and shutdown
you should be restarting the instance without the -i. Most use:
oninit -v
Which simply starts the instance and prints verbose status during startup.

The onmode -ky is fine. That's a normal way to shutdown the instance
blowing away any user connections first.
Onmode -s just puts the instance in maintenance mode where noone can connect
to the engine. This is used to begin shutdown but wait for existing
sessions to disconnect normally first. In earlier releases, before onmode
-j (single user mode) was available, DBAs used this to prevent new
connections preparatory to performing maintenance on the server. We'd make
a connection as user informix, set to mode to quiescent with onmode -s and
wait for all other users to exit so we could perform major maintenance.

You should name your own server something useful and meaningful, but demo_on
will work fine for initial testing.

Opps ! I mis-read the docs. Thought -i was juts initializing shared
memory.
It works OK now.

Thanks I get it .

Yes, but I want to go further. I want to create a new server with the
help of ISA. If I understand well, only sqlhosts an
onconfig.server_name are modified to do that.
Then I have to set INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG variables, launch oninit
-v and it should work.
Thanks for your help

Yes, that's just about it.
