Informix Development Question

Just Curious... As Background, I have worked with UNIX, Informix 4GL, and various Informix engines since 1986. I now 'think' programatically in 4GL or at least 4GL like terms. In what languages are applications being written in today which use an Informix Engine. I know that we are now platform disjointed between NT and UNIX (Linux is a UNIX platform) and being a UNIX bigot I know my preference. I know java is very popular with some but wanted to get the feel from this group. Perhaps I will pose the question like this...If you had a TRAINING budget of $1000 for each new developer - on what languages/platforms would you spend your money and why. Either post your response here or email me at robv@vorbroker.com Thanks in advance. Rob Vorbroker

In practice we're moving development staff toward Java. D4GL seems to have been getting better, and if we'd known enough about it, we might have considered it. Informix 4Gl is still a very robust product, easy to write and I'm prejudiced towards it because I can hack 4Gl code with one arm tied behind my back... But Java has a lot going for it. The cross-platform stuff, the JVM in the new versions of Informix (and Notes, and on various UNIX platforms), the ability to create web applications, the supply of developers keen to larn Java and so on. -- Andrew Pearson: "exactly what the web needs less of".
