Re: achieve verification

Same problem happened to us about one year ago . Our sytem Open Server
5.0.5 with OnLine 5 . Every night we do level-0 backup and everything seem
to be nice .Backup ends with message "Program over" and online-log was OK
also ( no error message, even a single strange word) . Suddenly on
Christmas evening 1999 thunderbolt came into our city and unfortunately
the equipment in the building was not prepared and our hardware is
crashed.
We try to find another new Unix box and start to restore the backup . But
what happened ?
We could not open the database . The restore run smoothly but there's no
data anymore .
So, we try to fix the old hardware and fortunately we can fix it . After
doing dbexport/dbimport we can start up the system again and it take about
5 days since the day the system is down.
Now , we do not want to take the risk . We are now always prepared with one
full backup system and every day we restore the last night level-0 backup
to the backup system and always check the results at least using ISQL to
see if the database still can be opened or not.
We choose not to upgrade to IDS 7.x.x because cost of the upgrade is much
more expensive compared to prepare a new Unix Box as a backup system.

If you don't have sufficient resources to do a full restore onto a test
instance, informix does come with a utility called archecker that allows
you to check the validity of an existing archive. Archecker works with
ontape as well as onbar. Not so sure with onarchive though, but I use
archecker every now and then for both my ontape and onbar archives.
Note, archecker I believe isn't available in the earlier engines (i.e.
Informix 5) but is available in the Informix 7 engines and beyond.
I'd consult the backup & recovery manual for actual archecker
specifics. Best of luck...
