Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
A poster on IDS 2000 9.20.FC1 had the engine frozen in CKPT REQ with Blocked:CKPT ARCHIVE. William Rice said it waits for sessions to leave critical sections, and guessed at running out of space for old pages during the archive or full checkpoints during backup; he suggested onstat -F. The poster said unblocking failed and restart seemed the only option. Jonathan Leffler queried the 2.5 TB shared memory figure. Unresolved.

How do we resolve this?
Thanks in advance

Yes, it means that you are waiting for all sessions to get out of a
critical section so that you can do
a checkpoint.
Hope this hleps

Blocked:CKPT ARCHIVE
I understand that but we have a blocked:CKPT ARCHIVE
We are completely frozen and tried to unblock it and it didn't work.
Are only alternative was to bring down the engine and let it go through
fast recovery.

What are you using for backups?
How long had the backup been running?
My understading is that a CKPT ARCHIVE copies the old image of the
modified pages which have not been backed up to a temporary table so that
they can be backed up, hence allowing you to get a point in time snapshot
I only have two ideas on what could cause this to cause a long checkpoint
when normal activity would not, but I am by no means an expert, especially
on 9.2.
1. You ran out of space to write the old pages for pages that were
modfied during the archive.
2. Maybe a full checkpoint is required during a backup(as in flushing all
the buffers) and so you are not
getting the benefit of fuzzy checkpoints, hence much longer checkpoints.
I don't do any admin work on 9.2
anymore, so cant test this far flung theory.
If it happens again, maybe you can on an onstat -F and see if your page
cleaners are busily working away,
as
well as look and see if you are out of space on any temporary dbspaces.
Just some guesses,
Will

2.5 TB of shared memory? What size is the database?
:-)
