Memory parameters and Workgroup Edition
Posted in 2014
A user running IDS 11.50.FC7 Workgroup Edition on Solaris, with a ~70GB mixed DSS/OLTP database, asked for documentation and tuning guidance on memory parameters, PDQPRIORITY and the DS_* onconfig settings, since he was hitting Workgroup's shared-memory ceiling. Art Kagel pointed to an IBM developerWorks edition-comparison article showing Workgroup has no parallel operations, so PDQPRIORITY/MAX_PDQPRIORITY are effectively 0 and most DS_* parameters do nothing. The only relevant ones are DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM (capped at 25% of DS_TOTAL_MEMORY); he suggested sizing them using query memory figures from onstat -g his.

IDS 11.50.FC7 on Solaris 10 Sparc - Workgroup I was wondering if anyone has any documentation specific to Workgroup edition that contains information about memory parameters, including PDQPRIORITY and the DS_* parameters. I am looking for something that contains recommendations, explanations of the affect of changing the parameters, etc. I am running a combination Decision Support as well as transaction database. It is probably a little heavier on the DS side. With Workgroup Edition I am running into hitting the maximum shared memory supported by Workgroup as well as trying to reach the greatest efficiency possible. Thanks. Larry
You also do not get PDQPRIORITY>0 in Workgroup Edition: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-0801doe/index.html Art Art S. Where it says that you do not have access to any parallel operations. The section is titled: Parallel operations and partitioning Parallel operations refers to the ability to execute SQL operations in parallel and also includes parallel index build, High Performance Loader and ON-Bar parallel backup and restore. Partitioning refers to the ability to fragment a table or index based on logical rules to improve data access and parallel processing You will note that under the Wordgroup Edition columns it says "Not available". This means that PDQPRIORITY settings are ignored in Workgroup Edition engines. Art Art S. OK. Should I just set MAX_PDQPRIORITY to 0 then? I assume that all the DS_* parameters are still affective in the onconfig file in Workgroup? Any suggestions/recommendations on where to start for the DS_* parameters? I will be tuning them, but it would be nice to have a recommended starting point. The database is approximately 70GB, and is about 50/50 DSS and OLTP. > > > IDS 11.50.FC7 on Solaris 10 Sparc - Workgroup Larry > To: ids@iiug.org > From: lsorensen25@msn.com > Subject: RE: Memory parameters and Workgroup Edition [33325] > Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2014 13:14:49 -0400 > > Where does it explain that PDQPRIORITY is not used in Workgroup? > > > To: ids@iiug.org > > From: art.kagel@gmail.com > > Subject: Re: Memory parameters and Workgroup Edition [33320] > > Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2014 10:26:07 -0400 > > > > You also do not get PDQPRIORITY>0 in Workgroup Edition: > > > > > > > http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-0801doe/index.html > > > > Art > > > > Art S. Effectively MAX_PDQPRIORITY is already set to 0. On the DS_ parameters, wellllllllllllll, the ONLY effect that these have is that DS_TOTAL_MEMORY limits the setting for DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM since the latter is limited to 25% of the former. DS_NONPDQ_QUERY_MEM is the only part of the DS_ parameters that does anything with PDQPRIORITY set to zero, which is effectively always is in Workgroup. Onstat -g his will tell you the sizes of your queries and you can use that to size these two parameters. Art Art S.
