RE: need help with raw devices..

Hazem;
Use onstat -d to look at the space you have allocated on your
existing chunk. On solaris 2.6 these are expressed as 2K pages. Your UNIX
admin should be able to tell you exactly how large each chunk is. If not,
try the devinfo command. Here is a sample from my system (Sun 6000, Solaris
2.6)
# devinfo -p /dev/informix/dm_dev_xxxx
/dev/informix/dm_dev_xxxx 55 14 3591 4197879 0 0
(Be sure to look at man devinfo on your system before using)
The dm_dev_xxxx is a symbolic link to the raw device. The output column with
the number 4197879 is the number of blocks on this device. On my computer,
blocks are 512 bytes. Therefore, I divide the 4197879 by 2 to get Kilobytes
on this device. This is a 2 gig chunk.
Going back to onstat -d, you can see how many 2K pages are allocated on this
chunk. Be sure to look at all of the entries, as you can use multiple spaces
on a single chunk by specifying offsets. Solaris can create nearly any size
chunk, but Informix can only use up to 2GB chunks.
There may be an easier way to do this, but I'm not aware of it. Be careful
with your calculations, as Informix will allow you to enter ranges that
overlap and will corrupt your database.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your valuable help, unfortunately my platform is sun solaris 2.6
so I'll be needing more help from you guys :))
I also need to know if there is any way I can make dbspaces with sizes
larger
than 2GB for the same platform (sun solaris 2.6)??
regards,
Hazem.
