SHARED MEMORY NOT INITIALIZED
Posted in 1999

I've installed my 7.3 online dynamic server, followed the instructions
in the admin manual regarding configuring sqlhosts and onconfig, BUT I
cannot init my dbserver. message is "shared memory not initialized
for INFORMIXSERVER ..."
I am running linux redhat 2.0.36. According to the release documents
that came along with the informix software, I need to install a bunch of
kernel patches so I can have 3000 max file descriptors, rather than just
256. I have yet to do this because redhat's ftp site is slow as
molasses. Is this the reason why I am having difficulty initiating my
database server ?
Here is the entry in my sqlhosts file, my dbserver name is batangas. I
want to be able to access it via 2 protocols, local shared memory and
networked sockets. hostname is peord. I created an alias in the
onconfig file named "batangas_tcp" and set corresponding NETTYP field
for it.
batangas_tcp onsoctcp peord batangas_tcp
batangas onipcshm peord batangas_shm
attached is my onconfig file. any help would be appreciated
thanks

You might need the patch for NET connections that is on INFORMIX's web site
for LINUX.
To see if you do, set up your ONCONFIG to use just shared memory connections
and see if it comes online. If so, you need the patch listed on that Linux
Web Page --- the same page where the product can be downloaded.
Take care.

Try to decrease this to 0 or 1, if you are not using multiple residency.

Remove poll thread to the NET vp. There is a bug on Linux, when poll
thread can't run in-line.
Also, check if SHMBASE is set properly.
If all of above wouldn't help, send us your message log and 'oninit -v'
output. Information, you gave, is too low to help you.
