Except for one thing that's not in the manual . . . . (I looked, hopefully
well)
IF your beta-test system has the same logical layout (chunks) as the
production system and
IF the versions of Informix are identical and
IF you don't mind making certain ONCONFIG variables the same on test as your
production system
THEN you can take a level 0 ontape archive on your production system and
restore it to test.
Certainly faster than export / import if you want the data copied to test.
OR
IF all you want is the database structure . . . then read the fine manual
under "DBSCHEMA".

-- it depends on what you need the copy for. If you want to have a test DB which
is identical to the productive system just to test the new programs on it
without risk of damaging productive data - then you really need a copy, possibly
regularly actualised. In this case you must have the same chunk layout.

-- You need exactly the same ONCONFIG parameters only during the restore. You
can change them after it.

Sure. We tried both. We exported / imported one of our database of a size appr.
100 GB. It took about 4 days. Recovering a level 0 backup with onbar and a fast
jukebox takes appr. 5 hours.
But! Export / import has the advantage that you reorganize your database.
