One of the first things you might try when you make contact that way is to get the numeric IP address of the site you're trying to reach from the recipient. Then have your sysadmin put their host name and IP address in your system's local host table. That might allow you to mail directly. Another possiblity is to telnet to rs.internic.net (IP 198.41.0.5), the InterNIC Registration Services Center. You can do sub-string and keyword searches for host domain names, contact name/address, etc. That might give you some ideas for better alternate mail paths.
