And me - we have a site which runs Dynix and we may upgrade them
sometime soon. I seem to be spending most of my time upgrading
Informix version at the moment (we have 15 Informix sites on
every flavour of UNIX imaginable - SCO,AIX,NCR,Dynix,Solaris 2.5...
Oddable-*NIX ok perhaps not the last one and they all have different
engines (SE 4.x/5.x/7.x,Online 5, OWS) different version of
4GL (4.1x/6.0/none at all - the so called binary-only sites where
we compiled on our SCO box and ship binaries). Some have SQL, some
don't...in the last week I've
installed SE 7.x on a SCO box (which had had a corrupt disk and
had the database restored up to Thrusday morning rather then
Friday so I had to help restore it).
Checked out another SCO box ready for putting Online 5.x on it.
Restored another SE database for another site where they had
managed to get 0 byte .dat and .idx files for the main table
in their database (Finished that at 10pm tonight)
Upgraded C4GL 6.03.UC1 -> 6.04.UC2 on a Solaris 2.5.1 box
running OWS 7.22 finished that 10pm last night..
I see now why Tim hates the TEN crap....
When you install OWS again it
a) sees it has already been installed
b) unless you do brand new install IT REINSTALLS WHERE IT WAS
BEFORE EVEN IF YOU HAVE A NEW $INFORMIXDIR SET.
Of course when I did a new installation it
a) created a new root dbspace on cooked files which I had to
- find space for - we didn't plan for this when we
quote out disk space requirements.
- delete after shutting down the 'new' online instance it
had oninit -i'ed for me.
b) overwrote my custom onconfig (which ues raw disk and is tuned)
with it's own onconfig.
c) overwrote my custom sqlhosts which meant I could not start
my second (demo) instance of OWS.
What a pain - I HATE the OWS installation, it is too automatic,
overwrites what I have done and forces you to use ~50Mb of
cooked space you will never need again.
I may be off to Scotland for next week to move an Online 5.x database
from one of out sites to the new OWS and another database will
go live on that OWS instance towards Thursday/Friday next week..
also I've started going down the gym (10-11pm!!!)
my life is getting very intense...
Sorry but it's late and it's been a long week.
PS Sorry to Tim about not replying but I can'e even keep up with
News (barely c.d.i never mind the other 10 newsgroups.. Phew!).
PPS I will write all the tools I promised + an ondiags to monitor the
health of online (pids of VPS still valid, logs not full etc
when life returns to somehting like quiet)..
