Second: What are the permissions on /etc, on that file if it exists?
Third: The file .infxdirs should be created in /INFORMIXTMP not in /etc!
I have no idea on that one unless it is a typo or error in the message. So
check the permissions on /INFORMIXTMP which should be:
drwxrwxr-x root informix
