Soundex function
Posted in 2017
A user asked whether Informix has a built-in Soundex function to populate a column. Early replies said no (unlike Oracle's PL/SQL soundex), suggesting a Java UDR, an SPL implementation from the IIUG software library, or the Basic Text Search DataBlade. Resolution: Mark Ashworth (IBM/HCL) pointed to an undocumented BTS UDR, bts_index_soundex_full(lvarchar, int, int), giving basic or extended codes for the first or all words; since it isn't documented it won't auto-register, so run 'execute function bts_release();' first. The poster said he'd try it.

Hello Is there any soundex function in informix to update a field with the data returned by this function? Thanks

Oracle has a PL/SQL function soundex, which generates a phonetic representation of a word. No, Informix does not have a similar functionality. I believe you would want to use the result in a trigger. Soundex is very limited from my point of view, only suitable for the english language. There are certain implementations out there in different programming languages. Maybe the option would be to generate a java based SPL. I don't think standard SPL could do this algorithm. I think he means 'sounds like' as in: function soundex("bear") returns "bear","bare","beer" or function soundex("key") retrurns "key,"quay" etc. mainly used for those that can't spell correctly (americans :-)) but can have problems understanding accents !! Pretty sure there isn't a function, but could the text datablade handle this in some way ? Ah, so we need a new function that will return the set of words that have the same soundex key as the given word. Very useful in genealogy. Our ancestors were English and did not really understand that there was one way to spell a name. Personally I have not used this, but there is Google... Page 423 of the "Migrating from Microsoft SQL Server to IBM Informix" says Informix does have this available. www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247847.pdf It appears to be in the Datablade Basic Text Search: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSGU8G_12.1.0/com.ibm.dbext.doc/i ds_dbxt_519.htm I do not have this blade installs so I cannot confirm, hope this helps. Maybe someone can do a Datablade session at the next conference... ;-) Eric Rowell

Hi All,
There is a Soundex UDR that is undocumented in BTS. Its been there for a long
time.
bts_index_soundex_full(lvarchar, integer, integer)
- The first parameter, lvarchar, is the string to convert into soundex codes
- The second parameter, integer, controls, if its basic soundex or extended
soundex. 0 â basic, 1 extended
o Basic soundex generates a 4 character code for a word
o Extended soundex generates a variable length soundex code for a word
- The third parameter, integer, controls if 1 or more words are converted to
soundex, 0 â only the first word, 1 â all the words
First catch, this UDR not a documented udr and unfortunately will not trigger
auto registration ð So if you donât already use BTS, you need to get bts
registered. This is easily done, just run this sql statement in your database;
execute function bts_release();(I will take a look at fixing this in a future release)
Here are some examples
Example 1: generate a basic soundex code for the first word in the string:
execute function bts_index_soundex_full('quick brown fox', 0, 0);
(expression) q216
1 row(s) retrieved.
Example 2: generate a basic soundex code for each word in the string:
execute function bts_index_soundex_full('quick brown fox', 0, 1);
(expression) q200 b650 f200
1 row(s) retrieved.
Example 3: generate extended soundex codes for each word:
execute function bts_index_soundex_full('quick brown fox languagesoup', 1, 1);
(expression) q2 b65 f2 l52221
1 row(s) retrieved.
Hope this helps.
