I have seen some sites using 4GL's ->but most of the sites seem to be using C. I get a different impression. While I don't have hard facts to support this, the messages on this forum indicate to me about equal numbers of applications developed in C, in 4GL, and in ACE/PERFORM. ->Could ya'll send me an e-mail, saying if this is true and why. I am ->really curious why. -> ->Personally, it is easy/faster to develop in 4GL and easier to maintain, ->but I realize C is faster in execution and more flexible to work with. I agree that 4GL is faster to develop and easier to maintain. The program execution (vs. DB activity, data transmission, etc.) is usually such a small percentage of the time taken by the program, that the faster execution of C is a moot point. As for flexibility, C functions called by 4GL routines will handle the very few things that 4GL does poorly or not at all. Based on this, I am at a loss as to why so much DB application coding is being done in C. ->I will gladly entertain comments/opinions/etc you send me. As implied by my comments above, I am an unashamed pro-4GL bigot. This is not to say I am anti-C. Consider how much C code I have posted recently. I just think that 4GL is better for *most* DB applications. ->Your info will be much appreciated. -> ->------------------------------------------------------------------------- ->Paul Watje SPAMIS Data Center ->paulw@spamis.jcdc.eta.gov Largest Informix Shop ->Voice: (800) 598-5008 in San Marcos, TX ->FAX: (512) 396-6600 Regards, Alan ___________________________ ______________________| R.
