tokelly asked whether the maximum chunk size in Informix 2000 was 8 GB or 2 GB. dilvish said the chunk is a file limited by the filesystem, and 2 GB reflects 32-bit word size. Watawinona reported a rumor that 4-byte integer limits would be removed from Informix 9 by autumn, allowing larger chunks. Art S. Kagel said he could not discuss 9.21 features but liked the rumor. No definitive answer.

The chunk size is a product of the filesystem. The chunk is a file and
thusly subject to the limitations of said filesystem. The file system in use
is also limited by the cpu (in general). The 2gb is a logical limitation of
the word size of a 32bit cpu. if you wish/need a larger chunksize, you might
look at your general setup, as you probably also need some serious power.

rumor has it that by fall, the 4 byte integer problems will be removed from
Informix9, thus allowing integer 8 chunk sizes.

I was asked to not discuss the features in 9.21 so I will not. I just want to
say that I like that rumor.
