Re: SURVEY: Software Maintenance Tools

Hi, A significant issue where I work that we've found that is directly proportional to customer satisfaction is the degree of pro-active-ness (?) that we DBA's provide. Where I work, internal corporate application programmers and data administrators hire us to manage their DB environments. We saw the need years ago for a proactive methodology to support our DB's. Thus we desgined a tool to do just that. There are many DB monitoring tools on the market, but in addition to being costly, they did not meet all of our needs. We wanted to respond to DB problems BEFORE the phone rang. We have accomplished just that with DBAmon. Example: One issue that plagued us was our ability to create an environment where we would get good, online backups consistenly on every DB every night. No tool on the market (as far as I know) measures backup age except the tool that we developed. This tool is also now available commercially.
