I have not used informix for a good couple of years and now I am thinking about porting a SQL Server over to informix I first need to know what informix server would best suit batch processing and some Web App queries ? What Os platform would be the best for this server ? and has the sp's structure and functionality changed alot in the last 5 years ? can you program cursors into the sp's and triggers? thanks
*I recomend you to use Informix under UNIX, in my opinion is the best combination. * Yes you can program cursors in the SPs * if you move from SQL Server to Informix, the SPs syntax is different in the way you declare variables, parameters, and assing data, etc. SQL is just th same. what about NT? what informix server engine would perform better with batch processing verus OLTP or datawarehouse approx how many databases can be running on one OS system ie: oracle recommends no more than 3 instances per unix /nt server SQL Server really gives you no limits If I had many clients would it be better/more efficient to put each client in its own schema or database ie: when using oracle if I put each client in its own instance then I have to deal with a seperate SGA <<system global area>> for each instance SQL server you just add a new database within the sql server Pricing comparable to DB2 >

You can also run as many instances as you like as long as you have enough resources to support them all. I have machines with over 100 databases in a single Informix instance. IMNSHO the only reason to run multiple instances, beyond needing to support multiple development versions of course, is if several databases may have conflicting resource requirements like peak batch processing occurring at the same time such that it is advantagious to segregate resources. In general, Informix's resource allocation is so good that it is not a concern but there are exceptions. > > If I had many clients would it be better/more efficient to put each client in > its own schema or database > > ie: when using oracle if I put each client in its own instance then I have to > deal with a seperate SGA <<system global area>> for each instance > SQL server you just add a new database within the sql server > Exactly.
