The answer is: it depends. UPDATE STATISTICS help the engine to do good decisions how to access tables. If the engine do one full table scan in a large table it might take up to several hours. With up to date statistics it might use an index which might take few seconds. Without statistics it is a matter of luck to get the faster one. With much luck the engine would be as fast without as with statistics. But we should use our luck somewhere we could win money ;-) Tommi
