Replication using two Targets on one Machine?
Posted in 2005
A user on HP-UX 11.11 wanted Enterprise Replication to feed two target instances on one box (9.21.HC5 and 9.40.FC4); adding the 9.40 server to the 9.21 sqlhosts crashed the server. Responders explained that pre-9.3 servers misidentify themselves to newer ones, so the newer (9.4) server must be started with the environment variable CDRSITES_92x set to the cdrIDs of the 9.2x servers (CDRSITES_731 for 7.31), as documented in the 9.30 release notes; a sqlhosts group/server naming prefix clash was also mentioned. The poster set and exported CDRSITES_92x=1 and both instances then replicated fine.

I am running ER on HP-UX 11.11 using a primary/target setup. I have one physical machine for our target server with two Informix instances: -one running version 9.21.HC5 -one running version 9.40.FC4 Currently the Primary servers only update the 9.21.HC5 instance. I want to gradually move all replication to the 9.40.FC4 instance, then shut off replication to the 9.21 instance. When I added replication for the 9.40.FC4 instance to the sqlhosts file of the 9.21 instance, the database crashed. Am I able to replicate into two targets running different Informix versions on the same machine? Thanks in advance for any insight. -daniel
There was a problem with 7.31 and 9.21 in that they did not correctly identify themselves. I can't remember the parameter, but there is an environmental variable that you need to add with the 9.4 server to define the 9.21 server. I think that it's somthing like CDR_SERVERS or ERSERVERS_9.2x, or somthing like that. I'm taking backups right now and can't get to my system, so I can't respond correctly. Check the release notes for this parameter. M.P. Using Enterprise Replication 9.3 with Prior Versions of the Database Server A know problem (PTS 128485) with using 9.30 Enterprise Replication with prior versions of the database server causes the pre-9.3 ER to misidentify itself when connecting to a 9.30 database server. To prevent this malfunction, you must set one of the following environment variables for the 9.30 database server: CDRSITES_731 cdrID for Version 7.31 database servers CDRSITES_92x cdrID for Version 9.20 and 9.21 database servers The cdrID is the unique identifier for the database server in the Options field of the SQLHOSTS file (i = unique_ID). For more information, see the Guide to IBM Informix Enterprise Replication, Version 9.3. For example, suppose that you have 10 servers whose cdrID values range from 1 through 10: * Five Informix Dynamic Server, Version 7.31 database servers (cdrIDs = 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7) * Five Informix Dynamic Server, Version 9.21 database servers (cdrIDs = 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10) If you upgrade database database server cdrID 8 to Version 9.30, you must set the CDRSITES environment variables before bringing the Version 9.3 database server online: setenv CDRSITES_731 "1,4,5,6,7" setenv CDRSITES_92x "2,3,9,10" =======================================================================
Yes, it's possible. With 7.x and 9.2x there was a bug with the sqlhosts group names (and server names ?), for example: repl1_new repl1 Informix has not checked the complete string, the first line that matches the string was used - in the above example Informix would use the line with "repl1_new" - when it should use "repl1"... Use instead for example: new_repl1 repl1 Then the problem doesn't occur. Yes - found it. The variable is CDRSITES_92x. On the 9.4 server, you need to have CDRSITES_92x="<list of 9.21 CDRIDs>" This is because the 9.21 server is not identifying itself correctly. M.P. Works like a charm now. Many thanks to all who responded - This had been really driving me crazy for about a week - After putting in the CDRSITES_92x=1 then exporting CDRSITES_92x , the both databases are working.
