oninit: Cannot open chunk '/usr/online_space001'. errno = 21
Posted in 2000
A user initialising IDS 2000 on Red Hat with 'oninit -iv' got "Cannot open chunk '/usr/online_space001'. errno = 21". Paul Watson pointed out errno 21 means "is a directory" - the chunk path had been created as a directory rather than a file. A second poster hit the same thing with errno 2 (file not found) and found the fix: the cooked chunk file must already exist and be owned/permissioned correctly, e.g. 'cat /dev/null > /local/informix/root; chmod 660 /local/informix/root'. Others noted this procedure is documented in the Administrator's Guide (cooked file allocation).

I get this error when I run oninit -iv:
oninit: Cannot open chunk '/usr/online_space001'. errno = 21
Everything is in the onconfig file, the dir exists and I set the
permissions using the file manager in kde (red hat 6.2), I don't know
how to set the permissions using chmod 660.
I think my whole setting up of chunks/raw disk space and memory is
wrong. If someone can give me an explaination on how to do it or where I
am going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the output of oninit -iv:

error 21 is a 'file is a directory', is /usr/online_space001 a directory
(bad) or a file (good)?

I have nearly the same error:
oninit: Cannot open chunk '/local/informix/root'. errno = 2
This file does not exist, thats right, but I tried to create
a new database and it should create the file!
Any ideas?

Okay. I got it.
The file MUST exist and MUST have the permissions "0660" on UNIX.
cat /dev/null >/local/informix/root
chmod 660 /local/informix/root
Why cant this be described in the manual?

I don't know where it described but I'm sure I saw it somewhere on the
document.
