Re: Keeping Track of Windows
Posted in 1994
In our multi-window programs, we have a collection of routines that manage opening, hiding and refreshing the different windows. We keep track of the application's current window -- we call it the "active" window to avoid terminology conflicts when discussing Informix's current window. Internal to the app, windows are numbered. There are centralized routines to do the things that require the window *name*. For example, whenever a routine needs to do something in a window it calls set_current(window_num) to make that window current. This routine contains a big CASE statement that executes the appropriate CURRENT WINDOW statement. This approach isn't quite as complicated as it sounds (it's complicated enough, though :-)). We lay out our windows to be tiled whenever possible to make maximum use of the screen and to avoid having the corners of obsolete windows sticking out from behind those currently brought forward. I sometimes wonder if the people who designed Informix's window facility had anything in mind other than simple pop-up windows. Perhaps 4GL++ will provide something a bit more general.
