RE: 2nd instance problem - still looking at 1st instance
Posted in 2005
On AIX 5.3 with IDS 9.40, a DBA set up a second instance (separate sqlhosts and /etc/services entries, unique ROOTPATH, MSGPATH, SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME/ALIASES, separate ONCONFIG, and switching INFORMIXSERVER/ONCONFIG), yet onstat -d in the second instance showed the first instance's data. Suggestions included using a non-zero SERVERNUM, checking exported variables and INFORMIXSQLHOSTS, verifying unique port numbers, confirming the two rootdbs devices/links and offsets really differ (a dbspace offset of 0 vs 12 was mentioned), and re-initialising with oninit -i. No confirmed resolution is recorded in the thread.

INFORMIXDIR should be the same for both instances and I am setting
both
INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG.
And I have confirmed that they really are being set (both by echo'ing the
vars and with env | grep'ping for them)

Something in your environment isn't being reset.
How are you resetting $INFORMIXDIR and $INFORMIXSERVER?

Change the SERVERNUM ( two instances can not use the same SERVERNUM on
the same machine )

Subject: 2nd instance problem - still looking at 1st instance [5171]
After I set up one instance and everything seems to be working, I
attempted to create a 2nd one.
I have entries in /etc/services for both instances.
I have entries in /informix/etc/sqlhosts for both.
I have unique values for ROOTPATH, MSGPATH, SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME and
DBSERVERALIASES in my config files (there is no mirroring).
And finally, I am changing the INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG environment
variables when I attempt to switch instances.
I've created separate links to my logical volumes and I've
double-checked that they are not pointing to the same ones.
But, when I do an onstat -d in the 2nd instance, it shows me information
from the first instance.
I've just gotten off the phone with our software vendor (who we are
supposed to have Informix support through), but they were absolutely NO
help - after
45 minutes, all I got was a useless document (their's, not Informix's)
telling me to do what I had already done.
Environment:
AIX 5.3
IDS 9.40
Thanks in advance,
Danny
May be unrelated, bt I have a vague recollection that using
SERVERNUM 0 is a bad idea.Throw some information back:-
relevant SGLHOSTS entries
relevant /etc/services entries
relevant environment details from each environment (are you
correctly exporting the variables?)
DBSERVERNAME/ALIASES and NUM from each instance.

Hi,
I am using 0 as SERVERNUM without any problem.
Are you using the same informix user for both instances?

Just to clarify, do you have separate files for onconfig

When you are switching to the second instance, are you setting the
environment variables ONCONFIG, INFORMIXSQLHOSTS and INFORMIXSERVER to
the second instance.

Foreword: After I composed the below email, I noticed that an updated
version of the installation doc (the one they sent me yesterday) for our app
said to put an offset of 12 for dbspaces.
The documentation I originally had said to use an offset of 0 (zero).
I'm not sure if this is cause of the problem or not, but I've dropped all
dbspaces except root dbspace, which I'm discovering cannot be dropped.
So if it cannot be dropped, how do I recreate it properly?
Kannan
onconfig files should be different, but the sqlhosts file can be the same,
and is probably best if they are.

What about the ports being used in sqlhosts? Even if you have each one
uniquely names, verify with /etc/services that they both point to unique
TCP numbers.

INFORMIXDIR should be the same for both instances and I am setting both
INFORMIXSERVER and ONCONFIG.
And I have confirmed that they really are being set (both by echo'ing

AIX 5.3
IDS 9.40
Thanks in advance,
If you have the servernumber set to 0, a bunch of "default" activity
takes place. That is why we have a rule at my company NEVER to use 0.

Hi,
I am using 0 as SERVERNUM without any problem.
Are you using the same informix user for both instances?

May be unrelated, bt I have a vague recollection that using SERVERNUM 0
is a bad idea.
Throw some information back:-
relevant SGLHOSTS entries
relevant /etc/services entries
relevant environment details from each environment (are you
correctly exporting the variables?)
DBSERVERNAME/ALIASES and NUM from each instance.

Just to clarify, do you have separate files for onconfig and sqlhosts.
When you are switching to the second instance, are you setting the
environment variables ONCONFIG, INFORMIXSQLHOSTS and INFORMIXSERVER to
the second instance.
Thank you,

Hi Danny,
You are correct. You can not drop a root dbspace as the root dbspace needs to
exist for an Informix exist for an Informix instance to exist. So, you do the
oninit -i to recreate the Informix instance. I like to use oninit -iv to getthe screen messages as the Informix is being initialized.
I have created and worked with multiple instances of Informix on the same
servers on IBM-AIX, Sun, and SGI. Somtimes I have as many as 9 or 10 Informix
instances up on a server at the same time. The process is the same regardless
of the hardware platform. If you are using the same Informix directory and the
same version of Informix binaries for the Informix instances then you can
share one sqlhosts file that has the necessary settings [server name,
connection type. host machine, service name] for the instances. The
$INFORMIXDIR will be the same for both instances when using the same binaries.
There will be a separate onconfig file for each instance. As other people
indicated, you need unique server names for the instances. Also check the
onconfig files for their SERVERNUM, DBSERVERNAME, and DBSERVERALIAS, ROOTPATH,
and MSGPATH.
Do a setenv and pipe it to more to verify that you settings are what you think
they should be. I like to create a separate source file for each Informix
instance. I then just source the source file to have the exact settings that I
need for the particular Informix instance that I want to access.
If you are having problems accessing the second Informix instance, are you
sure that you actually created a second Informix instance? What do you see
when you execute ipcs from the command line as user Informix? Do you see
multiple shared memory segments owned by Informix and two different sets of
Hex numbers in the third column?
Go to your $INFORMIXDIR for both instances and look at the Informix log files,
or to another location if you are storing the log files. What do the log files
show? If there is only one log file, then ether you are using the same log
file name and location [i.e. MSGPATH] for both instances [a no no], or you
only have one Informix instance.
