HP-UX PA-RISC/Itanium
Posted in 2006
A DBA asked whether an IDS 9.40 instance's chunks on a SAN could simply be switched (via MC/ServiceGuard) between an HP-UX PA-RISC 64-bit box and a new Itanium box, i.e. whether on-disk structures are identical across the two architectures. Replies were mixed: Art Kagel first warned against cross-platform disk sharing and suggested HDR, then agreed with Ron MacNeil that HDR requires identical architecture and pointed to Enterprise Replication instead. Others cited HP/IBM docs and machine notes claiming PA-RISC-created IDS databases migrate to Itanium without conversion, and noted a PA-RISC binary can run on Itanium (so same-binary HDR could work), while one user reported PA-RISC binaries hanging on Itanium but successful migration by cleanly shutting down and copying chunks. No definitive, officially supported answer was reached.

Hi, Currently in my Company we are have: - PA-RISC 64 bit servers RP74xx and L2000 class - all servers working with MC/SG application cluster connected to SAN storage XP Array - on this servers works IDS 7.31 and 9.40 - 7.31 stayed only on PA-RISC We will plan buy Itanium machine, connect to MC/SG and XP array. Next steep I will install on this machine IDS 9.40 on itanium platform, and reconnect storage (LVM/chnks) from PA-RISC to Itanium. By the way configuration will be identical on PA-RISC and Itanium. In this configuration Itanium machine will be master and one PA-RISC machine will be stanby. On all machine version OS are identical. My questions: Is this possible ? Internal database structure are the same on PA-RISC 64bit 9.40 and Itanium 9.40 ? Best regards ... -- HP-UX, DBA Admin wkg
No you cannot do that. The platforms are different, floating point formats are different, other things also. Even if the disk layouts and binary representations of non-floating point values happened to be identical I wouldn't trust such a setup with my business. What you can do is set up a backup server on the PA-RISC and primary on the Itanium using Informix IDS HDR replication with independent disks on each machine for the database servers. If you have to failover to the backup you'd just switch the backup server from secondary mode to primary mode and voila! Art S. My understanding of HDR was that this is not copasetic. I though you needed to have the same architecture for the primary and secondary servers as well as the same version of IDS on both servers? And in order to setup up HDR a restore of the primary onto the secondary is needed; I thought you couldn't (or shouldn't) restore a backup made on a different platform? But please tell me I'm wrong since I'll soon be facing a similar migration. No, you are correct. I answered too quickly. One would have to use Enterprise Replication (ER) to get around the platform difference. Art S. Please see Ron Macneil's post and my post in response earlier today where Ron comments that HDR will not work for you. Comments on the past problems you've had with IDS replication: > - programmers and aplication errors/crashing HDR crashing In the latest releases this is a rare problem. However, since you'll have to use ER that's really not a problem. > - very important reason spaces on disks: currently: 1TB + 1TB BC0 + space on tapes > - on HDR replication: 1TB + 1TB BC0 + 1TB HDR + space on tape Yes any replication must suplicate the disk. On the other hand you double your protection against drive/controller/array failure trashing all of your data. I count the additional disk costs as minor compared to the potential for loss. > - in my opinion simples split/pair XP arrary users have break only a few seconds, than split HDR replication, I must down ids , but I'm not sure ... Even if you split the array and start up the instance on the backup machine client users and applications still have to reconnect to the new server! If you use server GROUP names for connection ids instead of servernames the group failover to the backup is automatic on the reconnection request with no manual changes needed. DBPATH is also supposed to work but there have been versions of the Client iConnect where that was broken so I've come to trust the server group mechanism developed for ER instead. Art S. HP claims that HP-UX maintains high degree of compatibility between PA-RISC and Itanium based system. Here is the quote from document they published on their website (http://h21007.www2.hp.com/dspp/tech/tech_TechDocumentDetailPage_IDX/1,1701,9928 ,00.html): "One of the design goals of the Intel® Itanium® architecture was to maintain a high degree of compatibility with the PA-RISC platform deployed in HP 9000 servers. Consequently, an IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) database created on an HP 9000 server can be migrated to an Itanium-based HP Integrity server without the need for data conversion." Based on above document, it is possible to mix the two architectures to run IDS in a cluster environment or to run HDR between the two architectures. One has to make sure that they install same IDS version on both the systems. -Ajay
Wiesiek, The question is whether your Informix for PA-RISC is 32-bit or 64-bit. Itanium processor can run both PA-RISC (64 bit only!) binaries and Itanium binaries. PA-RISC processor can run only PA-RISC binaries (32-bit and 64-bit). That is, as long as you use 64-bit IDS, compiled for PA-RISC, you can do HDR from Itanium-based 'Integrity' server to PA_RISC-based '9000' server. I see, that most resent ports of IDS (starting with 9.40FC3) come separately for PA-RISC and Itanium. One should ask IBM support, whether Itanium port is a 'native' Itanic binary. -Alexey > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Wiesiek > Glod > Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2006 4:11 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: HP-UX PA-RISC/Itanium [7695] > > > Hi, > > Currently in my Company we are have: > > - PA-RISC 64 bit servers RP74xx and L2000 class > - all servers working with MC/SG application > cluster connected to SAN storage XP Array > - on this servers works IDS 7.31 and 9.40 > - 7.31 stayed only on PA-RISC > > We will plan buy Itanium machine, connect > to MC/SG and XP array. On one machine PA-RISC 64bit resides binary 9.40 an on second machine Itanium resides binary for Itanium version IDS 9.40. I will plan switching (HP-UX MC/SG) only between machines (SAN storage) dbspace/chunks not IDS binaries. Chunk structures are only compatible between IDS/PA-RISK and IDS/Itanium if these chunks are created by same IDS binary. That is, cross-platform HDR replication is only possible, if both machines run same 64-bit PA-RISC IDS binary. -Alexey > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of Wiesiek > Glod > Sent: Wednesday, November 01, 2006 3:22 PM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: RE: HP-UX PA-RISC/Itanium [7709] > > > On one machine PA-RISC 64bit resides binary 9.40 > an on second machine Itanium resides binary for > Itanium version IDS 9.40. > I will plan switching (HP-UX MC/SG) only between > machines (SAN storage) dbspace/chunks not IDS binaries. > Connect to previous post "I hear/not sure" > if the same versions informix works on PA-RISC > 64bit and Itanium the internal structure is > identical .... > > On Wed, 2006-11-01 at 13:01 -0500, Alexey Sonkin wrote: > > Wiesiek, > > > > The question is whether your Informix for PA-RISC is 32-bit or 64-bit. > > > > Itanium processor can run both PA-RISC (64 bit only!) binaries and > > Itanium binaries. As I understand it you want to run IDS on the HP Itanium machine with IDS 9.40.FCx (Itnaium port, i.e. native Itanium build) In case of a failure in the HP Itanium machine you want to connect the staorage system with all the Informix chunks back to the older HP PA-RISC machine and start IDS 9.40.FCx (a native PA-RISC instance) there. This would allow you to bridge the time until the Itanium box is up and running again . Is this understanding correct ? Based on the fact that it is possible to migrate the chunks from a PA-RISC IDS instance to an Itanium IDS instance (see machine notes for Itanium port!) it should be possible the other way round, too. I have not tried it yet. Also, I am not sure whether it is officially supported. HTH Tilman

Hi, as far as I know the PA-Risc IDS binaries DON'T WORK on Itanium. We tried it two or three times, but our database didn't reach ONLINE state but hung. But we have migrated from PA-Risc to Itanium several times the following way: stop database on PA-Risc / copy chunks to new Itanium machine / start database But I don't know if this works when the database crashes (for migration you do a clean stop of the database).
