In the 4.1 directory where the >programmers compile, what do I set TBCONFIG to? Nothing? (export >TBCONFIG="") I'm not going to have a database running in that environment. >Do I care what TBCONFIG is pointing to? It doesn't matter what TBCONFIG is pointing to unless you are going to be testing the software in the 4.1 compiling environment. It is only necessary to have the 5.03 engine installed with the 4.1 products if you are going to do testing in that environment. If you are not going to do any testing in that environment, don't even install the engine in the 4.1 area. Additionally, you have do some very fancy footwork to get the system running correctly in the mixed environment -- I think it can be done, but since you are asking these questions, I think it is probably better if you don't try to get it working. It will be much easier for you to compile the programs in the 4.1 compilation environment (minus the engine), and then copy it to the 5.03 working environment, reset the environment to the 5.03 engine, and then do the testing in the 5.03 environment. So, unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise, don't bother with the 5.03 engine in the 4.1 environment. Incidentally, your 5.03 engine should really be upgraded to 5.08 or some more recent version than 5.03. >Why do you think I should have the 5.03 engine installed but not running? To test the 4.1 application...? >Is that legal when you've only purchased one license of the engine? Interesting question. As far as I know, yes, though you'd probably need to keep the total users on both within your licenced number of users. And only if both installations are on the same machine. You might want to check with an Informix Sales Office before going ahead -- I am not able to give a definitive legal response. >The programmers will be the only users of the system who will ever use the >INFORMIXDIR that points to 4.1 directory. The application script will use >the INFORMIXDIR that points the engine. Correct? Correct. Yours, Jonathan Leffler (johnl@informix.com) #include <disclaimer.h>
