Informix Connection

Whenever I first connect to Informix on my Linux machine it takes around a minute just to start up the services or something until I finally get through, Just after that if I go in on another machine it will connect very quickly. I'm guessing its starting up some sort of connectivity service the first time and by the second time its already running so its faster. Then after a while it will become slow to connect again. I'm guess the service goes into a standby mode? Does anyone know what is controlling this and how I can get it to be constantly running and not time out? I'm using Informix IDS2000 on SuSE Linux 6.3

I would expect a small degradation in performance on the first connection, but not to the extent of taking a minute to connect. Is it a network issue -- some networking service (such as DNS) service taking forever to do its stuff? Presumably not, but important to check. How big a hunk of shared memory have you allocated to your server? How much physical memory do you have? How many processes do you have configured... Most likely you do not have enough RAM to keep the engine and its shared memory segments resident while you do other things so they get swapped out. Since the shared memory can be significant it can take a while to reload it all. The next Linux kernel promises the ability to lock shared memory segments into RAM so they do not swap, then you will be able to use the RESIDENT ONCONFIG parameter to lock shared memory and eliminate this problem. Meantime try adding more memory. Art S.
