Thank you. _______________________________________________________________ Any way to access an Informix database and a non-Informix database (dare I say it?) in the same query?
i would guess you could do that with the enterprise gateway manager. "Colleen M. select a.company_name, b.company_name
from dmxs@dmxsegm:"MFIDMX".company a, company b
where a.USER_CLASS_KEY=45
and a.company_key = 10000006
the above query was used as an example to prove the egm would
work ( a is an oracle table on a remote machine,
b is a local table)

As has been pointed out, EGM works well for this. However, EGM only connects to a finite number of types of databases. If you (or your development team) is brave and EGM does not support the database you are going against directly, then you can look into the Virtual Table Interface (VTI) option in the 9.X flavor of Informix. I have had the privledge(?) to work with VTI and found it to be quite nice. Basically you get to define the access methods for an external table. You write the access methods in C and control how you query data, etc with your C functions (I do not recommend doing it in JAVA). In the benchmarks run when I last did this, it was easily comparable to the speed to access an internal table (it does depend on the coding though) plus any network overhead applicable. (I am wishing I had kept ahold of the numbers right now) That being said, use EGM if you can. -- Rob Wilson rwilson@ntsource.com
There are also the Virtual Database products that can let you see any database you have access to and let you join them. "Colleen M. Use a supported gateway. Use ODBC, or better JDBC. Alternatively an X-Open server. Nona Nona
