IDS10 ODBC
Posted in 2008
A user couldn't reach IDS 10 on SLES9 from a Windows Client SDK/ODBC machine, getting "unknown network error", then "System error occurred in network function" after a one-minute timeout. Advice covered adding an onsoctcp entry in sqlhosts plus DBSERVERALIASES, testing with telnet/dbping, and checking Windows firewall. Local dbaccess over TCP worked, and netstat showed listeners on 9088/9089, but tcpdump showed incoming packets with no replies; the listeners were bound to the host name only, so the last suggestion was to prefix the host in sqlhosts with an asterisk (*sles9) and restart. No confirmation of a fix is recorded.

I sucessfully installed IDS10 on SLES9 Linux. I try to connect via ODBC to this engine but I always get an "Unknown network error". On the windows side I uses a client sdk 2.9 Is it correct that I didnt see an open port 9088 on the unix ids10 machine ? thomas
What do you see when you telnet <server> <port> - do you get a connection - if you don't then the engine is not listening on the port you think it is Try using the utility dbping Cheers Paul Paul Watson Tel: +1 913-400-2620 Mob: +1 913-387-7529 Web: www.oninit.com Failure is not as frightening as regret. Maybe you did not activate a TCP listener ?
By default, only shared memory access is configured.
You have to add a line like
<Server_tcp> onsoctcp <hostname> <port>to the sqlhosts file and list Server_tcp as DBSERVERALIASES in onconfig.
Then restart the engine and you will have a listen to that port.

I did all that. But my machine name and Serveralias is all the same. Should I
put the IP in the sqlhosts file ?
dbaccess is working, But if I try
telnet localhost 9088
I get a "conection refused". Same from a other pc.
I also studied the docs the whole weekend. But I did'nt found an answer.
Tried this. I got a "conection refused". May be the Express Edition did'nt allow connections from the network ?
Hi,
You misunderstood the comments. In IDS, the standard setup is to
establish a shared memory listener, which is sufficient für running
local applications.
You have to configure a second listener to support tcp connections. The
listener has to be set in the sqlhosts file with type onsoctcp.
To activate the listener, you have to put it as dbserveralias in
onconfig. The listeners must have unique names so we usually name the
tcp listener instance_name_tcp.
The selected port is up to your decision. The port can be a name from
/etc/services or a numeric port. It has to be unique and unused for the
machine/instance (in case you run many instances).

In my sqlconfig I already had a onsoctcp entry. But I maded a new one now. It
looks like
sles9 onsoctcp sles9 9088
sles9_tcp onsoctcp sles9 9089
DBSERVERNAME sles9
DBSERVERALIASES sles9odbc
In the IBM-Informix ODBC Driver Setup (on the windows pc) now I can choose the
new sles9_tcp in "Server Name" listbox. I also get errors if I misstype the
host or the username. So there must be a data exchange with the server. But
when I put in everything correct an click on the Database-listbox I get a
"System error occured in network function". BTW I takes about a minute until
the message comes up.
I did'nt found anything in the server nor the client logs. Is there any
strategy to come closer to the error ? Can I switch tcp-logging options on on
the server ?
Hi,
Can you connect on your Suse machine with dbaccess using this port ?
export INFORMIXSERVER=sles9_tcp
dbaccess
In this case, the Windows installation is the problem.

Yes I can. So windows should be the problem. But because it takes while and the odbc-client takes with the server, maybe a server log can help , too.

No. I used to have Zonealarm but I deactivated too. I just start to build a VM with a fresh WinXP SP2 Installation. Too that there is no Debug nor Logoption for the TCP connect in the server.
Hi Michael,
Can you post this information:
on suse box, as root enter
Ifconfig
command and post output.
Next enter
netstat -an | grep 908[89]
and post output.
Also, please check is firewall (ipchaiuns or iptables) running on suse box.
For iptables enter command
iptables -L
and if you see list of rules - that means iptables firewall is running.
Next, please post content of sqlhost file (NOT SQLCONFIG as you wrote)
Next, as informix user please enter
onstat -g nttand post output
On win box, open cmd and type
ipconfig /all
and post ouput here.
Next step is after you post this info
Regards,
Hrvoje

That's interesting. So I may have to analyze the tcpdump for a portnumber that it exchanged ? Or are there rules for the next portnumber ?
Thats one of my question. In the file /usr/informix/online.log I only have one msg: "Server started". In the ISA Web interface I have some more messages but none related to any tcp communication. Maybe I can switsch that on, but I did'nt found something in onconfig.

Please send us then output of:
netstat -anp |grep 9089
netstat -anp |grep 9088
And try this:
Add an asterisk (*) to sqlhosts:
sles9_tcp onsoctcp *sles9 9089
Restart informix after changing this.
