RE: IIUG - Q&A to IBM
Posted in 2010
Probably right? Sigh. Ok, first lets take a step back. Gumby is a persona that was created to rankle the then Informix management for being incompetent fscks. After leaving IBM, Gumby continued to exist to rankle the incompetent fscks at IBM. What a lot of people find irritating is that I *am* right most of the time, and the style in which I deliver the message. Since I did spend time in the belly of the beast, I do have a unique knowledge of just of fscked up IBM really is, and it becomes a no brainer to be able to predict their short comings. BTW, while there are those who post here defending the fscked up decisions by IBM, there are several others who I know that don't post here that agree with me. ;-) But back to the point.... It must of been hard for Jerry to say "... probably right...". That's pretty much the first step in admitting that IBM is fscked up and that they are now starting to realize just how fscked they are. (Sorry Jerry, admitting that you have a problem is only just the first step... :-P ) I don't know the exact numbers. I don't need to. When I see companies like Sears advertising for Informix/MySQL DBAs, along with DBAs at HomeDepot that put Informix/MySQL both in their job titles, well you can guess what that means... (If I have to draw you a map, then you guys are really pathetic or didn't clue in that less than 10 years ago, those titles would have been Informix w no mention of MySQL...) ;-) Yet I digress. The point is that after the 'true ups' and sun setting of older releases forcing those who want IBM's support meant that they would have to upgrade... the numbers of IDS licenses is no longer growing w "double digit" growth. In fact, if you take a look at the projections... the numbers don't look good. Now I've been critical of Jerry and I've been called out because some of the fscktards who are not doing their jobs are direct reports to Jerry and I was being unfair. Unfortunately, those who made the comments forget the concept of 'cross matrixed ' relationships which IBM is famous for. Jerry may not have held their papers, but he was an influencer and gave direction in to their job tasks. Meaning he had the ability to influence their PBCs. Note: Holding paper has two meanings in IBM. With respect to sales, it means you write and own the contract. Within management it means that you are in the management hierarchy and you hold direct responsibility of the employee. So Jerry could have easily done more to put a cattle prod to the fscktards who were in the position to "do" the job just long enough to get their ticket's punched. (Do I need to explain that term too?) And I've digressed far to long. The point is boys and girls, IBM has now made yet another series of promises. Unfortunately I seriously doubt that they will make the effort or commit the resources to actually turn things around. You see boys and girls, had they listened to Gumby 4 years ago, things would have been easier to fix. But after 4 years, you have to now fight inertia and the changes in the market place. It will be harder to make IDS relevant again. I'm not saying its impossible. I'm just saying Mills, Ambush's replacement, etc ... just don't have the energy, or balls to make it happen. The culture of IBM is of 'risk aversion' and they will not commit the level of resources now required. You don't have to like me, or even believe me. But just remember in 5 years, you heard it here first. But hey! What do I know? I've been calling it right since '97. ;-) -G PS. Jerry, you really need to get out of KC more. Chicago is really nice in the late spring time and heck, why don't you take Mills with you? I'm sure that there are a lot of customers in the Chicagoland area that you'd want to do a meet and greet ... -G To: cesar_inacio_martins@yahoo.com.br Subject: Re: IIUG - Q&A to IBM From: jkeesee@us.ibm.com Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2010 09:49:07 -0500 CC: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org; informix-list@iiug.org Cesar, This is a great question and a great idea. Unfortunately and I hesitate to say this but Gumby is probably right. I say probably because ultimately I can't predict whether or not IBM's future advertising strategy will change or not but TODAY are advertising is really at the BRAND level versus the product level. Someone else suggested that we do an add that contrasts the fantasy "IRONMAN" to what you get with INFORMIX. So, here is: Incoming to IIUG event from Brazil, in Newark airport I watch on TV the movie trailer Ironman 2 with advertising by Oracle/Sun. Check here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y56CbCpXohk When IBM will do the same with Informix and Superman movie??
