Buffer Turnover Ratio (BTR)
Posted in 2009
A user asked what the 'elapsed' term means in the Buffer Turnover Ratio formula BTR = ((bufwrits + pagreads) / BUFFERS) / elapsed. Art Kagel explained it is the fractional number of hours since the server was started or since statistics were last zeroed with onstat -z (e.g. 15 days 10h18m = 370.3), so BTR is expressed in cache turns per hour. The poster then asked why one 11.50.FC3W1 instance with 120,000 buffers performs badly while another with only 6,000 performs well; Art said it was clearly not a buffer cache problem and requested onstat -p/-P/-D/-d/-g iov/-g glo/-c/-g iof output. The poster posted the outputs, but no diagnosis or resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello, Can anybody explain that what is meant by the variable 'elasped' in the below mentioned formula. Which value should I put against this variable? I guess its the total # of hours that a instance is online/Up. BTR = (((bufwrits + pagreads) / BUFFERS) / elapsed) Regards, Anees Ahmad
The 'elapsed' is the fractional hours since the server was started or since
the last time that onstat -z was run to zero out the statistics. So if your
server has been online for 15 days 10 hours and 18 minutes and stats haven't
been zero'd since then:
elapsed = ((15 * 24) + 10.3) = 370.3
The results of the BTR calculation therefore are expressed in (cache) turns
per hour.

Art Thanks for the information.
Consider the following two blocks of outputs from the instance-1 and
instance-2 two.
--------------------
Instance-1
BR=0.565
RAU=98.6
BTR=7.36
BUFFERPOOL
size=2K,buffers=120000,lrus=46,lru_min_dirty=50.000000,lru_max_dirty=60.000000
--------------------
Instance 2
BR=1.99
RAU=99.88
BTR=2137
BUFFERPOOL
size=2K,buffers=6000,lrus=8,lru_min_dirty=50.000000,lru_max_dirty=60.000000
---------------------
The point which is disturbing me a lot is that the Instance-2 is showing very
good query/procedural performance where as the Instance-1 is showing very bad
performance and DB requests are getting timed out.
Does it mean that the bufferpool and LRU settings of Insatnce-1 are still not
tuned? Why the Insatace-2 with too few buffers is showing good performance?
The load of activities is very high at Instance-2 as compared to Instance-1.
Say if Instance-2 is executing 15000 requests a day then Insartance-1 is just
executing less than 500 requests a day.
Where might be the bottle neck? Same application is deployed on both instances.
The difference is only that
Instance-1 is running with 4 databases with 821 maximum concurrent
Instance-2 is running with only 1 database with 308 maximum concurrent.
See the following outputs of onstat -p for both instances

Both instances are running on the same machine and the same environment. Instance-1 with 821 maximum concurrent connections. Instance-2 with 308 maximum concurrent connections.
You obviously have something other than a buffer cache problem going on in
the instance#1. You can try posting other information and we'll try to
help, but I suspect that this is going to take a deeper analysis. If you
are interested in having someone look into this for you, contact me directly
to my email (art@oninit.com) and we'll work that out.
Meanwhile, post the following:
onstat -p
onstat -P
onstat -D
onstat -d
onstat -g iov
onstat -g glo
onstat -c
onstat -g iof
The community will take a look and see if there's anything obvious there and
try to help.
