What's your definition of "garbage"? If you add 2 years to 29 Feb 1993, you'll get 29 Feb 1995. But there isn't a 29th Feb in 1995, so the value is Unknown (aka NULL, aka 31 Dec 1899). Same thing happens if you add 1 month to 31 January. 31 February isn't valid, so Informix doesn't know what to do.
