open connection during checkpoint causes -25553 error ?!?

Hi
I have a strange error happening - after a functional database
application has been deployed for several months (with no changes)
we're seeing an increased concurrency of systems writing to this
database cause an error -25553 to happen.
What is this then?
We have (n) connections writing to the database, during a checkpoint
these all pause.
Another "write" request comes in, during the checkpoint, so the server
tries to create another connection to informix. At this point (we're
still during the checkpoint on the server) I get an error raised from
the
$ connect to dbname as << conn_(n+1) >> user uid password pwd;
call of -25553 ; which is considerably bizarre because the same code
has already created 5 connections to the database outside the time when
the database is checkpointing.
Its not a username, missing SQLHOSTS file, or auth problem - simply
because all these connections are using the same credentials, with a
different symbolic name for the connection.
Version of informix : 7.31.UC2 (Solaris 2.6)
Any ideas?

Try moving to 7.31.UC5.
Are you using shared memory connections? If so, make sure that you
are not corrupting the shared memory of the engine. Using
something like purify from www.purify.com.
Check the online.log
Check the OS logs, perhaps you are hitting an open file limit
in the OS. Perhaps you are leaving files open.
Which language is used for the part of the application which connects
to the database?
