Another source of "-4518 Out of string space"
Posted in 1993
Just had loads of fun tracking down the source of the infamous "-4518 Out of string space" error ... what I found was not mentioned in the recent thread on this topic. I found the problem was caused by using "AFTER FIELD" as below: DEFINE UpChar CHAR ... INPUT BY NAME ... AFTER FIELD FirstName LET UpChar = Rec.FirstName[1] LET Rec.FirstName[1] = UPSHIFT(UpChar) DISPLAY BY NAME Rec.FirstName ... END INPUT Looks nice and innocent doesn't it? (The temp variable is probably not needed, but I was getting desperate.) Problem is that on some systems the above will leave something in "string space" if the field IS NULL. (Verified this with liberal use of the tss_hog() function posted previously.) Yes, you could argue I should have checked for the string being NULL in the first place ... however, the above works just fine in all cases on my development system (SCO 3.2v4.1, RDS 4.10.UE2, 4.10.UG1 SE). It was on a production system that the problems occurred (SCO 3.2v4.1, RDS 4.10.UC3, 5.00.UD1 SE) -SRK -- Dept of Computer Science Internet: stuart@coral.cs.jcu.edu.au James Cook University Townsville Tel: +61 77 814992 Qld 4811 Australia FAX: +61 77 814029
